The readings don't match my other thermometer
Two instruments in one space rarely agree instantly. Compare over hours, in the same spot, and watch the trend rather than the number.
Put two thermometers side by side and they will usually differ a little. That is normal, and it is worth understanding before deciding either one is wrong.
Give them the same air
A sensor that has just been moved is still reading the place it came from. Both instruments need time in the same spot before their numbers mean anything next to each other.
A cellar is not one temperature
The top of a rack and the floor can differ by a degree or more, and the air near the cooling unit is not the air around your bottles. Two sensors in the same cellar but not the same place are answering different questions, and both answers can be right.
Compare over hours
Look at them across an afternoon, not at a glance. What protects a collection is stability and trend — a slow drift, a daily swing, a door left open — and those show up in a line, not in a single reading. A small fixed offset between two instruments matters far less than either one moving.
When to write in
If the difference is large, grows over time, or the readings jump around while another instrument sits still, tell us what you are seeing and we will look at it with you.
